VERSE OF THE DAY:
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. -- Acts 4:12

NEIGHBORHOOD GARDENS

The Neighborhood Garden is located on the corner of 11th and F Streets in Arcata.

The church purchased the Packer's House in 1975. The eastern portion of the lot was undeveloped except for some old trees and shrubs. In the spring of 1986, the Deacons approved the recommendation of Debra Heriott, Director of the Arcata Food Endeavor (AFE), that a neighbor hood garden be established. Most of the plots would be leased on an annual basis to low income people but several plots were assigned to the AFE to raise vegetables for the food program.

Debra, along with volunteers from the church, cleared the lot, laid out plots, and tied a water system to the Packer's House meter.

Over the years there were several grants obtained to improve the garden. The Deacons had oversight of the garden until 1977, when the AFE became a separate non-profit group known as the Arcata Endeavor.

Then the Deacons leased the garden to the AmeriCorps organization for three years. At the end of the lease, the Deacons again assumed control of the garden. In 2001, a church member donated the funds to install a separate water meter on F Street for the garden.
